Kirsan Ilyumzhinov congratulates Irina Rodnina on her anniversary

Ex-figure skater Irina Rodnina, who performed in pair skating, celebrated her 70th birthday on 12 September. She won gold at the 1972 Olympic Games in Sapporo in a duet with Alexei Ulanov. Together with Alexander Zaitsev she was the winner of Innsbruck-1976 and Lake Placid-1980. She also is a ten-time world champion and eleven-time European champion.

Thanks to her achievements, Rodnina entered the Guinness Book of Records as an athlete who did not suffer a single defeat in tournaments. After completing her sports career in 1980, the figure skater worked as a coach first in the USSR and since 1990 in the USA. In 2002, she returned to Russia, where she decided to pursue a political career. Rodnina is currently a deputy of the State Duma.
