The Russian government has approved the application of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous District (Yugra) to hold four major chess tournaments.

The region is preparing to hold the 2019 World Cup, the World Team Championship, the 2016 Women’s Grand Prix, the 2018 Women’s World Championship, and the International Chess 2020 Olympiad. "Chess tradition is developed in Ugra. Therefore, we stick to the chess calendar",  stressed KhMAO Governor Natalia Komarova.

"Chess Olympiad is a tournament for all nations", said the president of FIDE, due to whose active support, the Russian government had made this decision. "This is a holiday for everyone. The World Champions and novice chess players from Togo and Trinidad and Tobago take part in it. They can play with well-known grandmasters".
Recall that Khanty-Mansiysk, recognized by the FIDE President as "the world chess capital" already held the 2010 Olympics. Two thousand chess players from 150 countries attended it. Ilyumzhinov declared it the best sports event in history.
