300th anniversary of the meeting of Ayuka Khan and Peter the Great

June is coming to an end with its memorable dates, holidays, heat and rains... We are to tell you about one date that fell on June: meeting of Ayuka Khan and Peter the Great. Kalmyk Ayuka Khan left a noticeable mark in history - under him, the Kalmyk Khanate reached its peak and played a significant role in international relations in Europe and Asia.

Ayuka Khan was in power for more than 50 years. This is a unique case in the history of nomadic peoples. The name of the Kalmyk Khan Ayuki was well known over most of the Eurasian continent - from China and Tibet to Poland and the Ottoman Empire.
The Kalmyk Khanate played a significant role in the formation of the Russian Empire. The Kalmyks not only guarded the southern borders of the empire, but also participated in all the wars of Russia, starting with the Russo-Polish War of 1654–1667.

So, on May 13, 1722, Peter the Great left Moscow for Astrakhan. On the way, on June 20, he stopped in Saratov to meet and negotiate with Khan Ayuka on the participation of the Kalmyks in this campaign. On June 21, a historic meeting between the Russian Emperor and the Kalmyk Khan took place.
