Ilyumzhinov: “Carlsen defended his title of World Chess Champion for the third time”

On 28 November, the World Chess Championship ended in London. Norwegian grandmaster Magnus Carlsen beat American Fabiano Caruana in a tiebreaker and defended his World Championship title.

“As I expected, Carlsen remained the World Champion. The Norwegian left no chance for Caruana in rapid. The Norwegian was in his element, it was clear from the first minutes of the game. As I have already said, this happened solely due to his experience in matches of this level,” the sixth FIDE President said.

“Magnus Carlsen defended his title of World Chess Champion for the third time in a row and will retain the crown for at least another two years,” Ilyumzhinov said.
