Moscow bids farewell to Yuri Luzhkov

On 10 December, the ex-mayor of Moscow Yuri Mikhailovich Luzhkov died. And on 12 December, hundreds of people came to say last goodbye to the former mayor of Moscow. The first persons of our country and ordinary Muscovites were bringing flowers to the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour for several hours. Luzhkov was buried in the Novodevichy cemetery.

Kirsan Ilyumzhinov conveyed condolences to the family of Yuri Luzhkov. It reads as follows:

“I was shocked and stunned over the death of Yuri Mikhailovich Luzhkov, an outstanding statesman, long-term leader of our capital, a great friend of Kalmykia. The memory of Yuri Mikhailovich Luzhkov will forever remain in the history of Russia. My deepest condolences to his near and dear ones.”

Editors’ note. Luzhkov’s funeral was held at the Novodevichy cemetery and was attended by the ex-mayor’s relatives, officials and city residents. Accompanied by an orchestra of a guard of honour company, the coffin with the body of the former mayor was brought into a white tent, where the priests held the last service.
The burial ceremony took place to the sounds of the national anthem and salute of the guard of honour company. The former Moscow mayor was buried next to the writer Sergei Mikhalkov, actress Tatyana Samoilova and singer Lyudmila Zykina.
