Kirsan Ilyumzhinov congratulates fourth FIDE President on his anniversary

On 26 January, FIDE President Friedrich Olafsson celebrated his anniversary. The sixth FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov congratulated the International Grandmaster on a significant date. The text of the congratulation reads as follows:

“I cordially congratulate my senior colleague of the fourth FIDE president - - international grandmaster Friedrich Olafsson on his 85th birthday! The contribution of Mr Olafsson to the development of the international chess movement and to the strengthening of the authority of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) is invaluable. I wish you good health, prosperity and all the best! ”

Editors’ note. Friedrich Olafsson (Isl. Friðrik Ólafsson; born 26 January, 1935, in Reykjavik) is an Icelandic chess player, grandmaster (1958), fourth president in the history of FIDE (1978-1982), lawyer (until 1974 he worked in the Ministry of Justice of Iceland). The only FIDE president to remain a practicing chess player during his tenure.
