Ilyumzhinov: "Having won the World Cup, Aronian made himself a gift for the wedding"

The success of Levon Aronian at the World Cup in Georgia highlights the consistently high quality of the Armenian grandmaster's play, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov said.

Recall that on September 27, Aronian defeated the Chinese Dean Lichen in the World Cup final in Tbilisi. He won both games on a tie-break, first playing with white pieces, and then with black pieces. Previously, the opponents finished in a draw all four games in classical chess.

"Levon is a stable chess player who always shows good results. He won his first World Cup in Russia in Khanty-Mansiysk in 2005. Aronian is a multifaceted chess player; he is good in defense and in attack and have a deep understanding of his position. The fact that he won the Cup again, speaks of his consistently high level of readiness. He made himself a gift for the upcoming wedding by such a victory," FIDE President said.
"Levon is an intelligent and thinking chess player with encyclopedic knowledge. His play reminds me of the World Champion Tigran Petrosian’s style. I want to convey my congratulations to Levon and Chess Federation of Armenia, headed by President Serzh Azatovich Sargsyan. No wonder the Armenian team is a three-time Olympic Champion, and Levon Aronian always headed the team," Ilyumzhinov summed up.
