Kirsan Ilyumzhinov will be able to visit the World Chess Championship to be held in New York in November. According to the official letter from the US Embassy in the Russian Federation, in order to consider the possibility of visa issuance the FIDE President must provide additional documents.
Once all documents are provided, Ilyumzhinov will be invited to the US embassy for an interview.
Recall that the head of FIDE was included in the US sanctions list about a year ago because of his ‘support of the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’. Ilyumzhinov has denied all the accusations, stressing that by the very nature of his activity he should meet with leaders of many countries, and all his visits abroad are devoted to the promotion of chess.
