Ilyumzhinov visits Samarkand

On June 17-18, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov visited Samarkand during a trip to Uzbekistan. He was accompanied by Azerbaijani Ambassador Huseyn Guliyev, head of the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan Vasif Talibov and vice-president of the Chess Federation of Uzbekistan Husan Turdialiyev.

On the first day, FIDE President and Vasif Talibov visited the cemetery, where the first President of the country Islam Karimov was buried, and laid a funeral wreath.

Then members of the delegation visited the burial place of St. Daniel -- a place of pilgrimage for Muslims, Christians and Jews. Incidentally, the once dried walnut tree grows nearby, which blossomed after it had been sprinkled with holy water by the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexy II. It is believed that touching this tree leads to the fulfillment of deep wishes and desires.
The next item of the schedule was a visit to the mausoleum of Tamerlane (Amir Timur) and the Registan complex (a square and an architectural ensemble of the 15 – 17th centuries). On June 18, head of FIDE held a working meeting with the khokim (mayor) of the city Vohid Rakhimov. Ilyumzhinov spoke about the main directions of FIDE activities emphasizing the importance of the "Chess in schools" project. As a result, a preliminary agreement was reached that Samarkand was ready to host the World Youth Chess Olympiad for participants up to the age of 16 years or the Children's World Championship.
In addition, Ilyumzhinov gave an interview to a sports television channel and met with young winners and prizewinners of republican, continental and world championships. He played several games with talented children and was photographed with them in memory.
Incidentally, after returning to Tashkent, head of FIDE played chess with 7 year old World Champion among schoolchildren Khumoyun Begmuratov and his 3 year old sister Yasmina.
