On June 22, FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov met in Riga with the Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Latvia Karlis Sadurskis and the Minister of Finance of Latvia GM Dana Reizniece-Ozola.
The zonal President, the head of the Latvian Chess Federation Aris Ozolinsh also took part in the meeting. The parties, in particular, discussed the possible implementation of the "Chess in Schools" programme in Latvia.
Then the head of FIDE visited Liepaja where the closing ceremony of the third stage of the Baltic Zonal Chess tournament called ‘Kirsan Ilyumzhinov Cup’ took place. The winner of the Cup was Alois Kwainis (Lithuania). Kaido Külaots (Estonia) won in the overall standings and Toms Kantans (Latvia) won the bronze medal.
Ilyumzhinov made a welcoming speech, after which he awarded the winners of the tournament.
