"Khanty-Mansiysk has already reached such a high level that other countries and federations should use it as an example of how to conduct international chess events," said the President of FIDE Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, commenting on the event.
On February 7, an agreement was signed between FIDE and Ugra Chess Federation. The document regulates the preparation and holding the Chess Olympiad 2020 in the capital of Khanty-Mansi Autonomous District of the Russian Federation.
The agreement was signed by the head of Ugra Chess Federation, Mayor of Khanty-Mansiysk Vassily Filipenko and FIDE CEO Geoffrey Borg, who emphasized the full support of chess by the region's government.
