On November 17, head of FIDE attended the first Finno-Ugric chess tournament that took place in Vierumaki (Finland). The tournament is dedicated to the centenary of independence of Finland and Estonia and the centenary of Hungary's establishment of diplomatic relations with Finland and Estonia.
The tournament was attended by representatives of these countries and the regions of Russia where Finno-Ugric peoples live. At the airport in Helsinki, Ilyumzhinov gave an interview to Helsinki Sanomat -- the largest newspaper in Finland and Northern Europe.
A friendly banquet held in honour of the tournament was attended by Vice Speaker of the Finnish Parliament Arto Satonen, Presidents of the Estonian and Finnish Chess Federations - Ken Koort and Juha Sundelin and Secretary General of the Hungarian Chess Federation Zoltan Razh.
Kirsan Ilyumzhinov played two games with Arto Satonen. Black pieces won both games.
