Ilyumzhinov takes part in the opening of the pairing chess tournament

On January 13, the Fourth New Year ‘ChessEvents’ paired chess Cup was held in the Moscow Russian Chess School chess club on Marshal Zhukov Avenue.

The tournament was held on the initiative of grandmaster Maria Fominykh. It was attended by both venerable chess players and very young players. The best pairs received cash prizes. The prize fund was 100,000 rubles. Totally 27 pairs including grandmasters competed for the victory.

The tournament can be considered international. The Olympic champion in the national team of Ukraine, two-time European champion Natalia Zhukova took part in it. The tournament was opened by FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov. He, paired with Maria Fominykh, played an exhibition game against Alexander Morozevich and Polina Shuvalova. The match ended in a friendly draw.

Children and their parents also took part in the tournament: Grandmaster Georgy Castaneda with his daughter Alla; coach Grandmaster Sergey Zagrebelny, representing Uzbekistan, with student Polina Shuvalova; colleagues at work: journalists Vladimir Barsky and Eteri Kublashvili.
The winners of the bitter struggle were Alexander Moskalenko and Valentina Gunina. Second place was won by Igor Yagupov and Alexandra Obolentseva. Third place was won by Alexander Morozevich and Maria Fominykh. There were 9 prizes in total as well as special awards.
