The head of FIDE visits the opening of the European Youth Chess Championship

On 19 August, FIDE president arrived at the opening of the European Youth Chess Championship in Riga, Latvia. On the same day, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov met with the Vice-President of the Kazakhstan Chess Federation, international grandmaster Darmen Sadvakasov and the President of the Latvian Chess Federation Aris Ozolins. A number of important issues were discussed.

During the meeting, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov and Aris Ozolinsh recorded a joint video greeting for the Astana Mayor Asset Issekeshev on the occasion of his birthday. The head of FIDE expressed his gratitude to Asset Issekeshev for his contribution to the development of chess in Kazakhstan and the international chess movement. The European Youth Championship will be held in Riga, Latvia from 19 to 28August. More than 1000 chess players from 47 countries, including 150 Russians, will take part in it. The opening ceremony, as we already reported, was held on Sunday, 19 August, and the first games will be played today on 20 August.
