A bit of the history of Russian-Liberian relations. Diplomatic relations were established on 11 January 1956. In July 1985, relations were severed by the Liberian side. A year later, the Government of Liberia requested their restoration.
In the Soviet period, relations with Monrovia, taking into account its traditionally pro-American orientation, did not receive noticeable development, they were limited to cooperation in the field of education. The USSR and Liberia were bound by a number of bilateral agreements, including cultural and scientific cooperation (1976), trade (1979), and air communication (1980).
In December 2017, Vladimir Putin sent a congratulatory message to the newly elected President of Liberia, George Weah.
According to the Federal Customs Service of Russia, in January-May 2018, trade between Russia and Liberia amounted to $ 5.7 million.
Cooperation in the education continues. In the 2017/2018 academic year, at the expense of the federal budget, the Russian side allocated 3 places for the training of Liberians in Russian universities, another 25 students went to Russia on a commercial basis.
