Fourth President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) popularizes chess

On 27 January, deputy of the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg, deputy secretary of the St. Petersburg regional branch of the United Russia party Sergey Kupchenko met with President of the Russian-Chinese Chess Fund Dmitry Davurov.

Dmitry Davurov conveyed sixth President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) Kirsan Ilyumzhinov’s (who is currently actively promoting chess throughout the world) greetings to the Chairman of the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg, the Secretary of the St. Petersburg regional branch of the United Russia party, Vyacheslav Makarov. Sergey Kupchenko in response conveyed a greeting to Mr Ilyumzhinov from Mr Makarov.

Overall, the meeting was devoted to the development of the student and school chess in St. Petersburg. Chess is quite well developed in the palaces of youth’s creativity in all areas of the city, but, according to S. Kupchenko, the foundation of chess skills should be formed in schools.

Unfortunately, this idea has now subsided somewhat, but it has not lost its relevance. The main reason is the lack of the teachers who could teach chess at a high professional level. Therefore, the parties discussed the formation of chess clubs as extra-curricular sections or electives in schools. The parties also outlined certain tasks and identified areas for further activities.
