As Kirsan Ilyumzhinov said: “We see almost twenty centuries when we look at the walls of the Coliseum. You always feel the touch of antiquity in Rome.”
Built in honour of Emperor Nero, the Colosseum has long been used by emperors to increase their own popularity. Earthquakes and wars destroyed the former magnificence of the Colosseum, but even today it remains a silent reminder of the heyday and decline of the Roman Empire. Recall the prophecy of the English monk Venerable Bede: "As long as the Coliseum stands, Rome shall stand; when the Coliseum falls, Rome will fall; when Rome falls, the whole world will fall."
