Kirsan Ilyumzhinov congratulates veterans on Victory Day

Dear veterans!

Сongratulations on the Great Victory Day! This is your Victory, and we are indebted to you. Your immortal feat will always live in the memory of humankind as a model of valour, fearlessness and devotion to the Motherland!
Dear compatriots! We all, both the older generation and youth, live under a peaceful sky only because our fathers, grandfathers and great-grandfathers won the terrible war and gave the world peace on this day 75 years ago. There are no words that could fully describe the greatness of their feat and sacrifice in the name of the life of future generations. Very few are left who went through the war. Our duty is to take care of our veterans, to do everything so that their life is worthy today. That’s our current "front line".

The Kalmyk people made a worthy contribution to the Victory. 43 210 natives of our republic fought at the fronts of Second World War. People of Kalmykia actively participated in the partisan movement. About four thousand soldiers from Kalmykia were awarded orders and medals for military merits. Having shown exceptional courage and heroism, 22 warriors were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.

I also would like to say a few words about the first post-war generation. According to their status, they are not children of war and have no benefits, but they are not quite children of peacetime either.  Rather, they are peers of victory. You just think about how they were pampered and loved by the fathers who just returned from the war!
But hard times, difficult post-war years fell on their lot. They are now a little over 70 years old. They are at the high-risk age. And what do they have today, the children of the winners? Nothing but a ban on going out and a small pension, which is barely enough to buy some groceries and pay the utility bills. Who will help them? Who will make their life easier? But very soon they will be the last link that connects us with the memory of the war.
Dear friends! This great holiday is both joyful and mournful. The main thing in it is not a tinsel and pathos. The main thing in it is memory. If there will be no memory then there will be no us.
Congratulations to all on Victory Day! 9 May will forever remain a symbol of the triumph of justice, courage, steadfastness and selfless service to the Fatherland.
