On May 26, the first President of Kalmykia, sixth FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov visits 5th Sharjah Masters 2022 International Chess Championship as an honoured guest at the invitation of the tournament organizers.

The championship takes place on May 21-29 in Sharjah. Swiss system, 9 rounds. Time control: 90 minutes + 30 seconds per move. 80 chess players take part (61 GM, 16 IM, 3 MF). Among them is the international grandmaster from Tyumen - Maxim Chigaev (2631)
According to Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, this tournament has a strong line-up of participants. The prize fund is 60 thousand USD (the first prize is 10 thousand USD). After the first round, 26 participants scored one point each.
