On May 31, the holy month of Ur Sar began for Buddhists. This month is called "the month of a hundred thousandfold intensification", since the result of good and negative deeds in this month is multiplied by a hundred thousand times. Traditionally, the Kalmyks kept a fast in Ur Sar: they do not eat meat and abstain from drinking alcohol. It is advisable to take a vow (tser).
The first President of Kalmykia, sixth President of FIDE Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, while in the United Arab Emirates, congratulated fellow countrymen on the holy month of Ur Sar:
“Ur Sar is dedicated to the three great deeds of Buddha Shakyamuni - his birth, enlightenment and departure to nirvana. Peace and Goodness to your homes! May the merits for good deeds bring peace, tranquillity and prosperity to all of us, our children and grandchildren!
Editor’s note: Ur Sar is a month of celebrations in Kalmykia, during which the spiritual exploits of the founder of the Buddhist religion, Buddha Shakyamuni, are honoured. The Buddha chose this sacred month for birth, enlightenment and departure into Pari nirvana. In this month, the rites of worship of the earth are conducted and special prayers are read.
