Ilyumzhinov: "Turkmenistan can serve as an example in the development of chess"

Kirsan Ilyumzhinov visited Turkmenistan last week. Summing up the visit, FIDE President gave a comment to one of the Ashgabat websites.

"I congratulate all the Turkmen people on the opening of the beautiful sports complex in Avaza and the forthcoming 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, in which chess will be presented. The President of your country pays much attention to the development of sports including chess," Ilyumzhinov said.

"In Ashgabat we familiarized ourselves with the Olympic town. Two years ago, a chess palace was opened here, where 600 children can play at the same time. I think that this is the largest palace equipped with the latest technology. They have electronic chess as well as the digital clocks... I myself played with the children and I must say that the pupils, who have been playing there since five years old, have a very high level of chess skill," added the head of FIDE.
"In September, when representatives of more than 60 countries gather in Ashgabat, the world will discover a new Turkmenistan, a country that can serve as an example of the development of chess. We propose to hold international, Asian and World tournaments in Turkmenistan. Even The World Chess Olympiad can be held here," Ilyumzhinov summed up.
