The organizers of the tournament in Norway, which the Russian grandmaster, a contender for the title of World Champion Sergey Karjakin has refused to participate in, have no authority to apply penalties, said the President of FIDE Kirsan Ilyumzhinov.
"I would not go to Norway if I were him. What is the point when he had already twice been the winner of this tournament? There is no penalty or fine according to the contract. They can only say that he is wrong", said Ilyumzhinov.
According to the head of FIDE, Karjakin decision was agreed with the Russian Chess Federation. Ilyumzhinov also added that GM will defend the honour of the whole of Russia in the match for the world title, which Karjakin will play in New York against the current holder of the title - the Norwegian Magnus Carlsen.
