The head of FIDE: "The current system is optimal for the World Championship"

The current system of the World Chess Championship is optimal according to FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov.

"The FIDE Presidential Board discussed the organization of the match for title of the World Champion", Ilyumzhinov said. "Carlsen wanted to go back to the old setup but the Board had decided that the current system is optimal. Moreover, we consider possibility of holding the Women's Championship on the same system".

Earlier, World Champion Magnus Carlsen suggested returning to the knock-out system, which was practiced from 1999 to 2004, despite the fact that he criticized it a few years ago. The World Champion began his tournament path on a par with rivals under the former regulations. Currently, the Champion is determined by the result of the match for the Chess Crown between its current holder and the winner of the Candidates tournament.
