US Congress passes bill in support of Tibet

Members of the US Congress brought a sensitive for China Tibetan theme to the forefront of international politics. Both houses voted in favour of a bill that would provide for the possibility of imposing sanctions on Chinese officials who would try to appoint a new Dalai Lama.

The 14th Dalai Lama, who lives in India in the city of Dharamsala, has reached the age of 85. According to the Lamaism, his existence does not end with death.
He is reincarnated as a male child established by canon experts by a number of mystical signs. In particular, the child must recognize one of the things of the deceased by reaching out to it.
The mystical ritual of seeking the incarnation of bodhisattva of compassion Avalokiteshvara, the new Dalai Lama has been observed for centuries. But in the first decade of this century, atheists from the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China decisively intervened in it. The Office of the State Council issued a decree that in the future, "living Buddhas" must be approved by the government. In other words, the Tibetan clergy were deprived of the right to find reincarnations of eminent lamas, including the Dalai Lama.

The Dalai Lama himself calmly perceives the problem of the heir philosophically. He says that the institution of the Dalai Lama has not existed forever. It may disappear. And he told Russian pilgrims that he would like to visit our country again.

Yulia Zhironkina, director of the Save Tibet Foundation, said: “Russian Buddhists do not lose hope of seeing His Holiness in Russia. The last time the Dalai Lama visited Russia 16 years ago, when he paid a pastoral visit to Kalmykia. Having analysed the answers that the leading Buddhist organizations received from the Russian Foreign Ministry, we came to the conclusion that this issue is not being seriously considered. In response to our requests, we receive formal replies. Buddhists are asked to wait until relations between China and Tibet get better. The Foreign Ministry refers to the agreement on good-neighbourliness, friendship and cooperation between the Russian Federation and the PRC, a document adopted in 2001. However, the last visit of the spiritual leader to Kalmykia took place in November-December 2004, that is, after the conclusion of this agreement, and did not in the least worsen relations between the two countries. "
The bill, approved in Congress by both Democrats and Republicans, is expected to be signed by US President Donald Trump and become law.
