The head of FIDE opens the tournament in Zurich

On April 12, the opening ceremony of the 6th Zurich Chess Challenge tournament was held at the Savoy Baur en Ville Hotel in Zurich. This year it is dedicated to the memory of the chess legend Viktor Korchnoi.

After a minute of silence, the President of FIDE Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, chess patron Oleg Skvortsov, 12th World Champion Anatoly Karpov, head of the Swiss Chess Federation Peter Vis, former Vice-Champion of the World Ian Timman and GM Gennadi Sosonko addressed the audience.

The speeches of orators were alternated with musical performances. Then came the turn of the players: they set the drawing of lots for the tournament through the blitz.
The organizers of the competition are the Zurich Chess Club (headed by Dr. Christian Isler), businessman Oleg Skvortsov (International Gemological Laboratories, Moscow), Aviora Holding AG Baar, Savoy Chess Corner Zurich and other chess enthusiasts.
Eight famous chess players will compete for the prestigious award: Vladimir Kramnik, Peter Svidler, Ian Nepomnyashchiy, Grigoriy Oparin (Russia), Hikaru Nakamura (USA), Viswanathan Anand (India), Yannick Pelletier (Switzerland) and Boris Gelfand (Israel).
